GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Gun violence is a public health crisis that is claiming lives, traumatizing communities, and leaving families to carry unimaginable loss. Elizabeth approaches this issue as a nurse and as a leader who understands that prevention is both possible and necessary. That means advancing evidence-based policies that reduce harm, keeping weapons out of the hands of those who pose a danger to themselves or others, and investing in community-based solutions that address the root causes of violence.
Protecting our communities should never come at the expense of responsible gun ownership, but doing nothing is not an option when lives are on the line.
What Elizabeth Will Do
Ensure Universal Background Checks
Close the gun show loophole
Ensure every gun sale includes a background check
Why it matters: 90% of Americans support this. It's common sense.
SUPPORT ETHAN'S LAW
Establish commonsense federal safe-storage standards requiring firearms to be secured when a child or someone legally prohibited from possessing a gun could reasonably gain access.
Protect the Second Amendment while protecting our children.
Ensure gun owners take reasonable precautions to prevent a firearm from ending up in the wrong hands. Millions of children live in homes with unsecured firearms, and research cited in support of Ethan’s Law shows that secure storage can prevent youth suicides, accidental shootings, school violence, and firearm theft.
Why it matters: With the right to own a firearm comes the responsibility to store it safely -- and no family should lose a child because an unsecured gun was within reach.
Promote Red Flag Laws
Allow families and law enforcement to temporarily remove guns from individuals in crisis
Prevent suicides and mass shootings
Why it matters: Red flag laws save lives.
Invest in Mental Health and Violence Prevention
Address root causes of gun violence
Fund community intervention programs
Why it matters: Prevention works.
